Description

A set of records of intertidal and subtidal benthic biota is presented, collected at six sites in the northern part of Campana Archipelago, in the Katalalixar National Reserve (Aysén Region). The data set corresponds to 174 occurrences, representing three kingdoms, eleven phyla and 43 Operational Taxonomic Units.

Data Records

The data in this occurrence resource has been published as a Darwin Core Archive (DwC-A), which is a standardized format for sharing biodiversity data as a set of one or more data tables. The core data table contains 174 records.

This IPT archives the data and thus serves as the data repository. The data and resource metadata are available for download in the downloads section. The versions table lists other versions of the resource that have been made publicly available and allows tracking changes made to the resource over time.

Geographic Coverage

Samples were collected in July 2018 during the "Katalalixar II" scientific expedition organized by OCEANA-CHILE. The objective of this expedition was to explore the Campana Archipelago, located in the western area of the Katalalixar National Reserve (48° S).

Bounding Coordinates South West [-48.71, -75.541], North East [-48.36, -75.205]

Taxonomic Coverage

Samples underwent pretreatment for stable isotope analysis and were identified to the lowest possible taxonomic level using established identification guides for Chilean benthic macrofauna.

Sampling Methods

Sampling included the collection of flora, fauna, and sediment from six stations in the archipelago through SCUBA diving at depths between 10 and 24 meters. Samples of terrestrial vegetation, as well as dominant intertidal flora and fauna were collected to determine potential contribution of allochthonous organic materials to benthic marine food webs.

Study Extent The Katalalixar National Reserve (KNR) is situated in Tortel in the Aysén region of Central Patagonia, Chile. Established in 1983 it spans 6745 km2. KNR extends across several oceanic islands (Byron, Wager, Porcia, and Zealous), the east-west outer channels Martínez and Baker, the north-south inner channels Fallos and Messier and both glacial and non-glacial influenced inland waters (Sapag et al., 2017). In this study was explored the Campana Archipelago, located in the western area of the KNR.

Method step description:

  1. For benthic organisms, tissue samples were collected based on taxon-specific characteristics, following the descriptions provided in Andrade et al. (2016).
