Descripción
We present an updated database of 37 species of the genus Boeckella (Calanoida Centropagidae). This data aims to provide a comprehensive description of the geographic distribution of the genus south of latitude 40ºS in southern South America, the three-main terrestrial biogeographic regions of Antarctica (i.e. sub-Antarctic islands, maritime and continental Antarctica) and Oceania. Last version incorporates 201 new records, 193 from Oceania (i.e. Australia, Tasmania, New Zealand, New Caledonia), 7 new records from southern South America and sub-Antarctic island South Georgia and 1 new record from Mongolia. Additionally, we changed the taxonomic status of previous identification in the light of ongoing molecular studies.

Datos del proyecto
The present study provides an updated database of 37 species of Boeckella, using a combination of recent sampling data and published records available in the literature, giving a comprehensive description of the geographic distribution of the genus Boeckella at high latitudes in southern South America, the three main terrestrial biogeographic regions of Antarctica (sub-, maritime and continental), including Australasia, Mongolia and New Caledonia. We included new records from South Georgia and changed the taxonomic status of previous records.

Descripción del área de estudio | The dataset was filtered by the area of interest, defined as South America at latitudes beyond 40°S, which encompasses most of the Patagonian and sub-Antarctic Provinces and includes sub-polar forest and grassland ecoregions. The classically defined terrestrial biogeographic regions of Antarctica. The latter include the core sub-Antarctic islands (South Georgia, Prince Edward Islands, Macquarie Island, Heard Island, Crozet, and Kerguelen Islands), maritime Antarctica (west coast of Antarctic Peninsula, South Shetland Islands, South Orkney Islands, South Sandwich Islands) and continental Antarctica. For the purpose of geospatial analyses, two main ecoregions in South America were considered, these being the subpolar forest and grassland ecoregions as defined in the Terrestrial Ecoregions of the World shapefile (Olson 2001). Subpolar forest here includes the union of the Valdivian and the Magellanic temperate forest ecoregions, and the grassland ecoregion includes the union of the Patagonian steppe and low monte ecoregions. The definitions of the continental, maritime and sub-Antarctic regions are as described in Convey (2017). Finally, we updated this dataset including records from Australasia, which involves published and unpublished records from Australia, Tasmania, New Zealand, New Caledonia and Mongolia. |
Descripción del diseño | This database will underpin future comprehensive systematic research on the genus, including the application of molecular phylogenetic approaches, allowing reconstruction of the regional evolutionary history of the genus, and in particular its members in the sub-Antarctic and Antarctic regions. |

Métodos de muestreo
Collections took place from the shoreline, scooping individuals from the water column of lakes, ponds and small pools using a zooplankton net at locations across sub-Antarctic islands (Crozet, Kerguelen and South Georgia), maritime Antarctic (i.e. islands at the west side of Antarctic Peninsula, South Shetland Islands and Signy Island), part of the sub-polar forest ecoregion and Falkland/Malvinas Islands. Samples were immediately preserved in ethanol (99%), other than a small number of collected specimens that were preserved using formalin (5%) for morphological analysis. GPS positions were recorded for each sample location.

Control de Calidad | Records lacking precise geographic location (coordinates) were assigned georeferences by identification from the description (e.g. lakes names) of the reported collection locality included in the relevant metadata. The species list was updated to exclude erroneous or suspect records, rule out possible synonymies and include up to date taxonomy. |
Descripción de la metodología paso a paso:
- For taxonomic identification at species level, the fifth leg from male specimens was removed and observed under an inverted microscope at 10X and 20X for confirmation of diagnostic characters as described by Bayly (1992). All available information was collated from the scientific literature reporting sampling or taxonomic revision of Boeckella species in southern South America, the sub-Antarctic islands, maritime and continental Antarctic. We included Boeckella records from 1855 to 1997 listed in the historical review of Menu-Marque et al. 2000 and additional information available in the literature from 1997 to present. Only records including the geographic location (coordinates) or approximate (identifiable) location of reported samples were incorporated in the database. Regarding the records from this new updated version (Australia, Tasmania, New Zealand, New Caledonia and Mongolia), were collated from scientific literature (enlisted in this metadata) and from the dataset of Ian Duggan and Ian Hogg from University of Waikato through BOLD System. These authors obtained, identified and classified the specimens. There were changes in the classification of species rank in Falkland/Malvinas Islands, Punta Arenas and possible a new lineage in Hornos Is. (Cape Horn, South America). Manuscript with molecular and morphology analyses is in preparation.
