Cobertura geográfica
Carnivores in the Mammal Collection were collected primarily in Chile, across multiple localities such as Shangri-La, Cauquenes, Concepción, Caleta Vítor, Las Condes, Arauco, and Chiguayante, among others. In addition, the dataset includes specimens from Germany (Berlin and Raiten), Uruguay (Río de la Plata), Argentina (Caleta Olivia), Mexico (Zacatecas), Spain (La Robla), Antarctica (Low Island and King George Island), and the United States (Ingham). Regarding georeferencing, none of the specimens initially had geographic coordinates provided by the collectors. In these cases, approximate decimal coordinates were estimated based on locality information using tools such as GeoPick and the Georeferencing Calculator.

Cobertura taxonómica
Carnivores in the Mammal Collection comprise a total of 6 families, 13 genera, 20 species, and 6 subspecies. Overall, 5 specimens are identified at the genus level, 92 at the species level, and 10 at the subspecies level. Each specimen was taxonomically validated and updated from the most general to the most specific taxonomic categories using the “ASM” tool from the Mammal Diversity Database. To preserve the taxonomic history of each specimen, both the original identification and the currently accepted scientific name were retained. Original scientific names were recorded in the previousIdentifications field.

Métodos de muestreo
The original sampling methods used to collect the specimens are not documented. The records correspond to historical specimens incorporated into the collection over several decades through different means, including field collections and donations. As a result, detailed information on capture techniques, sampling effort, or standardized protocols is not available.

| Control de Calidad | Taxonomic validation was carried out by updating the taxonomy and scientific names of each specimen using The Mammal Diversity Database, along with curatorial actions that included the preparation of updated specimen labels. In addition, the condition of the individuals associated with each record was reviewed by verifying their physical presence in the collection and confirming the corresponding specimen counts. Georeferencing information was also validated to ensure that each record was associated with geographic coordinates (latitude and longitude). For specimens lacking coordinates provided by the collectors, approximate decimal coordinates were estimated based on the available locality information using GeoPick and the Georeferencing Calculator. Data consistency and formatting were further reviewed and standardized using OpenRefine, allowing the detection and correction of formatting issues, inconsistencies, and duplicated values across Darwin Core fields. Finally, all records were validated using the GBIF data validator to confirm that the dataset complies with the requirements of the Darwin Core standard prior to publication in GBIF. |
Descripción de la metodología paso a paso:
- Specimen data were initially recorded in an internal database of the Zoology Museum of the University of Concepción. The information registered includes collection locality and geographic coordinates, sampling protocol (when available), collection date, collector and identifier names, number of individuals, and taxonomic identification with its corresponding systematic classification.
- During data entry, the consistency of the information was verified against the museum’s physical inventories (specimen labels, catalog cards, and accession books). When necessary, taxonomic identifications were updated by consulting The Mammal Diversity Database. This process resulted in the taxonomic update of 71 specimens. To preserve the taxonomic history of each specimen, both the original identification and the currently accepted scientific name were retained, with previous names recorded in the previousIdentifications field.
- Geographic information was also validated to ensure that each specimen is associated with verifiable latitude and longitude coordinates. For records lacking coordinates provided by the collectors, approximate decimal coordinates were estimated based on locality information using GeoPick and the Georeferencing Calculator. Data formatting and consistency were further reviewed and cleaned using OpenRefine. Finally, the dataset was validated using the GBIF data validator prior to publication.
